So grab your snowshoes and head outside to celebrate U.S. Snowshoe Day!

Feb. 27 – International Polar Bear Day

International Polar Bear Day on February 27 raises awareness of the issues facing polar bears and the ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint. The polar bear is a true icon of the Arctic and a powerful symbol of the threats posed to our planet by climate change. As the planet warms and the Arctic ice melts, polar bears are increasingly struggling to find the food they need to survive. With your help, we can make sure that polar bears are around for future generations to enjoy. Polar bears are classified as marine mammals, carrying with them a thick layer of body fat and a water-repellent coat to keep them insulated against the icy cold air and water they encounter on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean. With their territory melting away beneath them, International Polar Bear Day is an important opportunity for us to remind ourselves what is at stake here, preserving the future of these magnificent mammals.
Feb. 26 – Pete’s Sake Day
Pete’s Sake Day is celebrated every year on February 26. Since the 1700s, people have used minced oaths as substitutes for profanity. Though the origin of this practice is unknown, it likely arose as a way to avoid blasphemy. Today, we continue to use these phrases in moments of frustration or clumsiness. “For Pete’s sake” is one such phrase that has been singled out for special attention. This is likely because “Pete” is a euphemism for St. Peter. However, it is a euphemism that is used so commonly that its original meaning has been lost. Though the origins of this phrase are unclear, we can still use it to add a bit of color to our language.
