Halloween Dress Rehearsal
It’s October 29, and I believe we’ve reached the part of the month when nobody should expect too much from us.
There are two days until Halloween. The candy is in danger. The decorations have become permanent residents. And somewhere in this house is something I put in a “safe place” that apparently requires a séance to locate.
Welcome to Thursday. Please keep your expectations somewhere near your slippers.
The candy situation needs supervision
I bought Halloween candy with the very best intentions.
Unfortunately, the person supervising the candy is also the person eating it. There’s a conflict of interest, and management has declined to investigate.
Every time I pass the bowl, I think, Well, I should make sure these are still good.
They are. I checked again.
At this point, the trick-or-treaters may be getting a button, a spool of thread, and some encouraging words.
My sewing room is already wearing its costume
Some people transform their homes into haunted houses for Halloween.
Those of us who sew simply open the sewing room door.
Mysterious piles? Check.
Something lurking beneath a sheet? Probably the project I started in April.
Strange noises? That’s me dropping a bobbin and listening to it roll into another dimension.
And the scariest sentence you’ll hear all season?
“I think I have enough fabric.”
Please. Even the ghosts know that’s a lie.
Thursday has no business giving me assignments
Thursday always arrives looking innocent.
Just a little day between Wednesday and Friday. Nothing to worry about.
Then it hands you six errands, a laundry pile, and the question, “What’s for dinner?”
I don’t know, Thursday. What did you take out of the freezer?
I’m trying to enjoy the last few days of October. I want autumn leaves, something warm from the oven, and a respectable stretch of time when nobody needs me to find anything.
Especially something they are currently standing beside.
Today’s official decree
Wear the comfortable clothes. Use the pretty mug. Spend a little time making something just because you feel like it.
And if your plans go sideways, remember that this close to Halloween, almost anything can be explained as part of the atmosphere.
Dust? Haunted.
Cobwebs? Seasonal.
Talking to yourself? Consulting the spirits.
I’ll be here, conducting one final candy inspection before the afternoon gets away from me.
What’s the situation at your house—ready for Halloween, already eating the candy, or pretending you didn’t hear Thursday ask about dinner? 🎃
With love, loose threads, and suspiciously few peanut butter cups,
Bella ♥
