Hello November
Please Lower Your Expectations
November has arrived, and apparently we’re supposed to switch from spooky and mysterious to organized and grateful overnight.
I’m grateful. Very grateful.
I’m just not organized.
There’s still Halloween candy in the house, a pumpkin looking uncertain about its future, and at least one project on my sewing table that was supposed to be finished before we started discussing stuffing.
Let’s ease into this.
My Holiday Planning Department Is Currently Having Coffee
This is the time of year when I start having ambitious thoughts.
“I could make handmade gifts!”
“I could try a new Thanksgiving recipe!”
“I could finally straighten out the sewing room!”
That last one always gets a laugh.
Straightening the sewing room usually involves finding a piece of fabric I forgot I owned, imagining three new projects, and making a bigger mess. Technically, I’ve accomplished something. I’ve increased the workload.
Meanwhile, the boys are curled up looking completely unbothered. Their November schedule includes breakfast, naps, and investigating any sound that might possibly be cheese.
They have excellent management.
Can We Let the Leaves Finish Falling?
Outside, Connecticut is putting on its last autumn show. Golden leaves, chilly mornings, and wind that gives your hair the appearance of having survived a minor electrical incident.
Inside, I’m reaching for coffee, cozy layers, and the comforting belief that there’s still plenty of time.
Please don’t count the days until Christmas in the comments. Some of us are holding ourselves together with cardigan sleeves and leftover chocolate.
I do love this season, though. The warm kitchen smells. The early evenings that practically insist on a blanket. The chance to make something with your hands while the world gets a little quieter outside.
Even if that something is a tiny doll outfit and you spend twenty minutes searching for the piece you just cut.
It’s usually attached to your sleeve.
A Little Room for the Good Stuff
This November, I’d like to leave room for small pleasures: a good laugh, a creative afternoon, a song worth playing twice, and checking in on someone who could use a friendly hello.
I’ll still have a list. I enjoy writing lists. Sometimes I even do things on them.
But if the coffee is hot, the dogs are happy, and I get a few stitches sewn, I’m calling that a lovely day.
Welcome, November. Pull up a chair.
Move that fabric first. There might be scissors under it.
What are you looking forward to this month—and what are you happily putting off?
With love, laughter, and a little thread on my sweater,
Bella ♥
