Sofa Calling
Sew Much to Do.
November has a way of turning perfectly reasonable creative people into blanket-covered negotiators.
One minute, I’m planning a cute doll outfit, sorting fabric, and feeling like a woman who might actually finish something. The next, it’s dark outside, the coffee needs reheating, and the sofa is making an excellent case for my immediate arrival.
And honestly? The sofa has supporting documents.
My fabric has plans for me
There’s something about this time of year that makes every scrap look like a possibility.
That little plaid? A tiny pair of pants. That soft knit? A doll-sized sweater. That piece I’ve been saving because it’s “too pretty to cut”?
Apparently, it’s entering its seventh year of being admired.
I can look at one piece of fabric and imagine an entire outfit. Ask me to decide what’s for dinner, however, and suddenly I require a committee and three business days.
The boys have already clocked out
While I’m deciding whether to sew one more seam, the boys have settled into their evening positions.
The Yorkie is monitoring the room. The Maltipoo is testing the blanket. Neither has offered to wind a bobbin, pick up a pin, or explain where my scissors went.
They do, however, believe I should sit down.
Preferably somewhere that doesn’t disturb them.
It’s lovely to have such devoted little supervisors. I just wish their management style involved fewer naps and slightly more help.
A little making still counts
I love the feeling of finishing a project, but some days all I manage is choosing the fabric, cutting a few pieces, or sewing one small section.
That counts, too.
So does figuring out why something isn’t working. So does putting a project down before frustration convinces me to make a permanent decision with the scissors.
There’s room for a small creative moment without turning it into an all-day production. A quick sketch. A pocket sewn. A color combination tucked away for later.
Sometimes that tiny bit of progress is enough to make me want to come back tomorrow.
A November arrangement
Here’s the deal I’m making with myself: a little creating, a little getting cozy, and fewer arguments with the daylight.
I’ll try to finish a seam before I reach for the blanket. The boys will continue contributing absolutely nothing to the sewing process. And the beautiful fabric I’m afraid to cut may finally get its moment.
No promises on that last one. We’ve developed a relationship.
With love, a warm mug, and a project within reach,
Bella
